Sports round-up from around the globe

Coronavirus not only halted economic activities but also paused the sports activities from all around the world. The biggest sports event, Tokyo Olympics was postponed. International Football major tournament like Euro Cup 2020 and Copa de America was also postponed. The domestic football leagues like English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 was also postponed. The stadiums were converted into medical facilities in Europe and South America.  One of the biggest domestic cricket tournaments PSL was canceled before semifinals and finals and players were sent back to their homes. IPL the biggest domestic Cricket League was also postponed; major international cricket matches were also postponed. Now that the situation is under control In Europe the sports activities are resuming but with no crowds.

English Premier League resumed in June and Liverpool managed to win the league after two decades. La Liga the Spanish football league is also in its last phase with Real Madrid on the brink of victory defeating Barcelona the former Champions. French Football league Ligue 1 was canceled and PSG was declared champion on the basis of points. Juventus is leading the Serie A table and is few matches away from becoming the champions of Italy. Bundesliga is dominated by Bayern Munich with Lewandowski as a top scorer.

UEFA Champions League is to be resumed in August with quarters and semifinals reduced to single-leg games. The draws were released by UEFA on Friday.

International cricket has also resumed in England. West Indies arrived in England in June and the first Test match started on July 8, 2020. England Scored in 204 and 313 in two innings while West Indies scored 318 in first innings and now are chasing the target of 200. Pakistan’s cricket team is also in England and will face Netherlands and Ireland before facing England in August.

Domestic cricket has also revived in England whereas sports activities in the US, South America and Asia are still suspended due to worse Coronavirus situations. While Europe has resumed the sports activities it is expected to be continued without crowd throughout the year. Other countries have also announced to resume sports activities after coronavirus is controlled.
